Svchost Using 100% of CPU, Memory leak
Here is a problem I have seen quite a few times. After booting into Windows the computer starts to slow horrendously. When Task Manager is launched it shows that svchost.exe is using up maximum CPU or memory and occurs when Automatic Updates is enabled.
To see whether or not you have this issue go to the “Processes Tab” and then press “Mem Usage” twice to bring the items using the most memory to the top. If you have this svchost.exe memory leak bug you will see that the amount of memory usage svchost.exe uses will keep increasing until CPU becomes 99 or 100%. Below is an example of what this looks like..
How to stop svchost.exe using up 100% system resources (Windows XP Only):
Visit the Microsoft website and Download Windows Update v3 WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe and save it to your desktop
Download this file Register.bat & save it to your desktop
Download this file WindowsXP-KB927891.exe and save it to your desktop
Reboot the computer and log in to Windows XP in safe mode.
Log on as “Administrator”.
Run register.bat which will re register shed load of dll files, wait until it finishes.
Then Run WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe file, wait until it finishes.
Then Run WindowsXP-KB927891.exe, This update may not be needed depending on the service pack level.
Restart and all should be well 🙂
